I’m worried. Have been since last night, really. Why, you ask? Well, actually, it’s complicated. Because, I’m more worried than I was in one respect and rather a great deal less worried in another. You see, John and I just finished watching the last episode of the first season of HBO’s standout series, ROME and, while my fairly constant concern over the state of things with Legionnaire Titus Pullo are somewhat – only somewhat, mind you – assuaged... well, I’m now all verklempt over the turn of fate assailing erstwhile Centurion Lucius Vorenus.
I love these guys. LOVE THEM.
It makes me ALL SORTS of giddy to watch TV this good at any rate but, I really love stories that deal with all of the stuff that the Pullo/Vorenus plot touches on – oh, now stop that! I mean aside from the whole ‘ruggedly handsome men running around in short skirts’ thing. I mean friendships that flourish in the face of a staggering lack of commonality between the parties involved; brotherhood; male bonding rituals; shared hardships; the code of the warrior... okay okay. The short skirts are fun, too. *giggle*
Seriously.
Dour, Tight-arsed Martinet (who is, of course, really kind of a softie under all that boiled leather armour) and Irresponsible, Slovenly Brute (who is, of course, really kind of a softie under all that boiled leather armour) are continually forced into situations wherein they must rely upon each other and eventually become fast friends. I so totally dig that stuff.
It’s like watching an Ancient Roman version of the Odd Couple.
“You leave me little notes on my pillow. I told you 158 times I can't stand little notes on my pillow. ‘We are all out of cornflakes, F.U.’ It took me three hours to figure out F.U. was Felix Unger.”
SO yeah – I loved watching this series. I did. But, y’know, I also worry. Bad things happen to these guys. Usually RIGHT after something really quite nice has happened to them. So... sure. My Pullo concerns are assuaged for the time being... but that only serves to make them that much more worrying. If you follow me. And as for Vorenus? Oh dear. I fret.
All of which really means is, if I don’t see the second season of ROME soon... I shall fret MORE. I shall DEEPLY DEEPLY fret. I have a lot of emotional investment in these guys, y’know.
Of course, I had a lot of emotional investment in Julius Caesar, too. So much so that, upon seeing how I reacted to the end to which he came, John turned to me – agog – and said, “Seriously – what did you think was going to happen to JULIUS CAESAR?”
To which I responded, “Yeah, well, every time I read a new KING ARTHUR story, I hope for the best, too.”
It’s HARD being a goggle-eyed optimist. F.U.

Watched the first three episodes! Man I forgot how awesome this show is. I mean, I knew deep down of course, but seriously, Go Rome!
